Us and our philosophy

Located in the Adelaide Hills, overlooking the rugged Torrens Gorge, Mt Bera was initially founded as an orchard in 1855 and converted to vineyards in 1997.

Owned by the Horner family since 2008, Mt Bera currently has about 15 hectares of vines grown on some of the steepest sites in the Adelaide Hills and produce exclusively Estate grown, single vineyard wines such as Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and the Austrian grapes Gruner Veltliner, Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt. The Mediterranean climate with cool nights and dry warm days are perfect for producing small, intensely flavoured berries with a strong varietal character. A range of varied microclimates are provided due to the extreme variations in topography and air catchment, which makes it possible to grow a large range of grapes not normally grown within such close proximity.

The focus at Mt Bera is on producing premium wines, sourced from the highest grade fruit hand-picked from our vines. Biologically sustainable farming practices are our mantra with nothing artificial used in our vineyards. This flows through to our winemaking with the wines made with minimal intervention and aged in top quality French oak. We believe that adhering to organic and biodynamic practices allows each vintage to truly reflect the season and the location.

The Boundless Horizons label features Mt Bera’s top end wines – produced only in exceptional years from the most outstanding barrels.

The Wild & Free range is our spiritual home; where the wines are made from wild ferments using only the natural yeasts on the grapes. Ultimately, we would like to have nothing but grapes go into the bottle but for now we add a low level of sulfur to allow safe travel and storage.
