In November 2011 the first small section of Tempranillo was grafted on to Merlot vines in the lowest section of the Retreat Valley Rd vineyard as a test to see how it would perform. The site was chosen as it has very cool nights and Tempranillo loses acid very quickly if the night time temperatures are warm. The test vines all grafted beautifully and the sample grapes looked good. In November 2012 a larger section was grafted – giving a total of just over 1.6 Hectares of Tempranillo. 2013 was a fabulous year and the flavours were dominated by rich raspberry chocolate.
